BOUCLIER HYPERTENSIO
Prevention, Screening, and Monitoring of Hypertension
Hypertension (high blood pressure) is one of the most widespread chronic diseases in Niger, and also one of the most silent. Often undiagnosed, it causes major damage: strokes, heart failure, kidney failure, diabetic complications, and premature mortality.
Many people live with hypertension without knowing it, due to the lack of regular screening, limited access to reliable devices, or insufficient awareness of the risks.
Niger is facing a rapid increase in this disease due to factors such as:
-
Sedentary lifestyles and reduced physical activity,
-
Excessive salt intake or unbalanced diets,
-
Stress and difficult socio-economic conditions,
-
Lack of systematic screening,
-
Self-medication and the use of dangerous traditional remedies.
In response to this silent emergency, ONG LUSAA is implementing HYPERTENSIO, a national program designed to prevent, screen, and sustainably support people at risk or already living with hypertension.

Vision
A Niger where every citizen has simple, regular, and reliable access to blood pressure screening, and where people living with hypertension benefit from continuous, appropriate, and affordable follow-up care.
Overall Objective
Reduce morbidity and mortality related to hypertension by strengthening prevention, early screening, access to care, and patient follow-up.
Specific Objectives
-
Raise widespread awareness among populations about the risks associated with hypertension.
-
Deploy community-based, school-based, workplace, and medical screening programs.
-
Improve access to medical consultations, reliable blood pressure monitors, and treatments.
-
Train health workers and community health relays in hypertension management.
-
Implement digital monitoring mechanisms and blood pressure logbooks.
-
Reduce severe complications through rigorous and continuous follow-up.
Strategic Axes of the HYPERTENSIO Program

Promotion of healthy practices: reduced salt intake, balanced nutrition, and daily physical activity.
-
Combating self-medication and the use of unregulated traditional products.
2.Early and Mass Screening
-
Blood pressure screening in communities, workplaces, schools, and public spaces.
-
Integration of screening into routine medical consultations.
-
Deployment of mobile teams to reach rural and remote areas.

Support for the supply of essential antihypertensive medicines.
-
Establishment of referral points for complex cases.
4. Training and Capacity Building
-
Training sessions for nurses, doctors, and community health workers.
-
Development of standardized hypertension management protocols.
-
Training on patient therapeutic education.
5. Digital Monitoring and Surveillance
-
Implementation of a digital system for blood pressure monitoring.
-
Creation of a digital and/or paper blood pressure logbook for each hypertensive patient.
-
Regional dashboards to monitor prevalence and complications.
Beneficiaries
-
Adults at risk of or living with hypertension.
-
Elderly people.
-
Young adults in urban and peri-urban settings.
-
Health workers and community health relays.
-
Rural and urban communities.
Expected Impact
-
Reduction in the incidence of strokes, heart failure, and kidney failure.
-
Improvement in nationwide early screening rates.
-
Decrease in premature mortality linked to hypertension.
-
Sustainable improvement in the quality of life of populations.
-
Strengthening of health system capacity in the management of chronic diseases.
-

Why is the HYPERTENSIO program essential?
Because hypertension is a silent yet deadly disease.
Without regular screening, it remains invisible until a serious event occurs. It is a fully controllable condition when detected and treated early.
HYPERTENSIO provides populations with a real opportunity to prevent life-threatening complications and to live healthier lives.
